As far as i know these are honorary posts.. seldom sent on grassroots duty.. only pay and privileges provided.. generally specialists are assigned technical tasks.. these people are mostly confined to office postings only not field postings as such.. CM has powers to make dsp/sdm etc to any govt employee anytime.. however there promotion to dm/sp require consent by upsc which is seldom provided.. it's same as Nomination in RS or LS.. to infuse outside talent to bureaucracy which is otherwise cocooned in the false sense of supremacy and WE KNOW ALL attitude.. however Politicisation and misuse/abuse of good provisions is INDIAN HABIT Another example they going for Lateral Entry concept.. giving this concept at S level as of now will be disastrous ..at central level also possible negative repercussions but today more centralized and strong checks at central level so benefits may outweigh negatives..
PS- Don't worry tumharo posts pe aanch nhi aayegi.. very soon people in system realises the fallouts.. like Rekha and Sachin g realised the euphoria of getting nominated in RS and now paying by FORCEFULLY attending the Arena of Monkey-Fighting which is not their cup of tea but the "monkies" enjoys it !!!
Those arguing that sportsperson give a lot of effort, neglect education in their quest to achieve glory and hence deserve such jobs are plainly missing the point that no one forced them to be an athlete.
If athlete's career is short then that is a risk associated with that career just like other career's also have associated risks and they should take their decisions based on such factors.
Giving away crucial administrative posts in the name of promoting sports is just plain political stunt and is a mockery of civil services aspirants who put their sweat and blood into these exams.
And it's not that these athletes have worked hard, everyone who wants to achieve success works hard.Hard work Shouldnt be equated just to physical work.
Last line is crux of debate... On name of promoting sports..politicians compromising developmental activities.these are not the honorary posts
This is an ideal example of Indians being rigorous opportunists. When opportunity arises, we grab. Our society worships power, when its offered ona dinner plate, we take it with folded hands.
People crying hoarse cuz a woman athelete who won silver medal in olympics given a SDM Post. She has already proved her mental strength , dedication and capability to do hard work which is way more than what is required for becoming IAS. As far as merit is concerned, mains exam is not only the sole parameter to judge administrative capabilities when many ministers( not to include PM) have shoddy degrees. Its a good step ,and it will promote sport, her expertise could also be utilise in sports administratration. what worse could possibly happen ? She may fail in discharging her duties..so many PCS officers do. infact she should have been given group A central service post..This idea was mooted by former sports minister Ajay Makan.
It is a way of honouring achievers in sports, a field in which our performance has been too bad. This points out to the fact that these posts are still seen as "titles" and power centres and not that of public servants. Whom to blame? Government or the administration ?
And years of dedication , perseverance and physical n mental strength on one hand.... And years of memorising of facts and figures on the other. Who will be a better administrator? I don't know
Strange, no eyebrows were raised when SRT got into Group captain of the IAF, dhoni, kapil dev into the army or Abhinav bindra in it. It is way of paying respect to players. These are just symbolism, encouragement and popular politics. But I wonder, whether Messi or Neymar or Ronaldo or Fedex or Serena Williams etc are SDM of their districts in the country , or are we following colonial legacy of some sort.

She undoubtedly showed her mental strength and hard work in sports but how can you equate it with the mental strength and hard work of an administrator ? You are comparing the incomparables. On what grounds can you say that a sportsman has merit more than that of an IAS ? Both have different kind of reasoning and aptitude to deal with problems in their specific fields and to indulge them into administration is not only a shame for the system of bureaucracy but also a shame to their capabilities . If a person who has achieved milestones in sports be given top class asministrative posts then we have plenty of sportspersons who are sitting idle in home right now , let's just shutdown UPSC and SSPCs and start recruiting them directly.
