Mathematics Optional

I have read pros and cons about mathematics optional.
Some points bother me -:
1)With score of 300+- in Mathematics for all ranker from 1 to 1000 it seems like a level playing field that is one getting 800 rank and one getting 100 rank have similiar score.
2)I know one can score good after hard work in this Optional but I want to know other side of this like those who regret taking this Optional and later changes despite being from IITs or NITs or with good aptitude in Mathematics.
I have interest in Mathematics but it can't be sole reason of selecting an optional so if anyone has past experience related to maths, please share.

This optional require more than that.
-Take it only if you are highly pationate towards the subject.
-No matter what, you are able to study this subject atleast 5/6 hrs daily.
-If you can do it by self study because guidence available is minimum.
-Be ready to compete with all the other pationate people.
-The completion of syllabus once requires one year, & it requires multiple revisions after that.
-You will definitely have to compromise on your GS study, you will have to study maths even if prelims is a month away, because if you loose touch from Mathematics you will suffer alot.
-The syllabus is huge & the most challanging topics are Modern algebra/Fluid mechanics/Real Analysis/Statics-Dynamics.{yes physics related topics are also there}
But inspite of all the efforts this optional requires,people are taking it because they are highly pationate for it.They dont take it just by looking at the high scores in the subject.
If you can manage this subject it will be very rewarding in the end.
You will score 50/60 marks more than the average marks scored in humanities optionals.
I hope you are able to make a right choice now.

I have done Btech from one of the IITs (3K rank in Jee Adv too ) but no contact with Science Optional in last 2-3 years .. Score was good in grad in Science subjects( even perfect score in Maths in one of the sem) but how to know if I am passionate, very dumb question but I just cant figure out

brother if you are from iit , & have prepared maths in your jee preparation you can definitely opt for maths optional.
But upsc maths preparation is bit different from JEE preparation. In JEE the syllabus is limited & we learn the concepts & apply them in exam & get through.
But here in upsc questions asked are not very difficult but because of the vast amount of syllabus & many types of problems it requires to put in a lot of labour.
In JEE if you have brilliant hold of concepts you will get through. But here apart from concepts you need to put in a lot of effort practising all previous year questions & all standard texbooks.
In my opinion only requirement for you would be "sitting" if you can sit with maths for 1.5 yrs @ 4-5 hrs per day, there wont be any problem.
