Catchment area is the location where the river gets it water. In simple terms it is the region of capture of water for the streams. For example , consider the drainage basin of Ganga, which has tributaries like Alaknanda bhagirathi son koshi yamuna etc. These tributaries also receive their water from samller tributaries.
so catchment area will be defined as the region from where these rivers or tributaries get their water. For example Son has its catchment area in Vindhyan ranges and the tributaries which makes its a river has ctachment area in Amarkantak and the surrounding rehions.
While watershed is boundary or area which cover these catchement area. It is the region which cover the focal point of all the convergence of streams.
For example , A number of tributaries form river son. The watershed will be the area which cover the location from where rhe stream gets it water.
Often catchment area and watersheds are used interchangeably.
