GATE for Mathematics or engineering stream?

I prepared my graduaton engineering subject for a PCS exam recently. I studied it after some time, and briefly but felt it is so convenient as well as predictable as compared to any humanities optional. Though this can backfire as well. Because if you don't know something in paper, you just can't beat around the bush. I'm done with this exam. Thinking of giving GATE now to primarliy prove a point to me, and gain self-belief years after graduation and feeling like a nowhere-nothing man, and to also see what opprtunites open up from it.

But... the post-graduation in my discipline doesn't appeal much to me. May be my awareness about research possibiities is low. But I see immense opportunities from doing post-graduation or further in mathematics specially in areas like machine learning, AI etc. Why not instead give GATE in maths? It may take more effort than my engineering stream wud, but will give more returns. There is october, nov, dec, january to prepare for it. And people do prepare Maths for UPSC optional as well. Here also it is more predictable than History as an optional. Probably also better choice for people with slow handwriting, like me.

What should I do - give GATE in maths, or stick with my discipline? Of course UPSC continues to occupy my mind, but having turned 28 - need to manage the future in the best possible way. Can't settle for bank PO, or SSC jobs as backup. Have high aspirations. Though I also need to factor in falling hair, and need to scurry for an understanding earning woman as lifepartner who wud be comfortbale with me not earning for 3 more years atleast, or meeting me with a bald head in years to come. Abhi to poore baal hain, but I knwo where my head is heading.

But abhi GATE kis mein doon?

aaj last date hai GATE mein apply karne ka. So every knowledgable person do reply promptly and comprehensively. It will help.

  • Useful info for graduates in CSE, ECE, post graduates in Physics, Chemistry, and PhD in science people: government also needs more and more specialists from science, and using GATE as the recruitment exam. Not necessary to leave your field if you are eying govt job other than PSUs:

Direct recruitment to Group A level posts in Central government, i.e., Senior Field Officer (Tele), Senior Research Officer (Crypto) and Senior Research Officer (S&T) in Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India, is now being carried out on the basis of GATE score. http://www.davp.nic.in/writereaddata/ads/eng_58101_25_1516b.pdf
  • give gate only if you can get IISC bangalore which means top 50 rank in your stream. Because off all IIT and IISC only IISC is better for research rest all IIT are shit when it comes to research field plus seats are hardly 5-10 per branch per organisation through gate. Now lets take EC ( electronics) branch . Highest student appear for gate from this branch (2.5 lakh) and number of vacany including all the organization recruiting through gate is ( hardly 100-150). So it is not that easy as it looks plus within 4 months its not easy to get a job through gate if your studying it for the first time plus as u said 28 years which means u have given enough time for upsc so your mind is not as fresh as 21-22 year old student so it will be hard to get new concept when your mind is already saturated while studying for so long. U can try but chances are less. I m not demotivating u as i have already done this before plus u will be competing with older gate students who are giving this for 4-5 years. Every field is as tough as UPSC
  • Dude have you thought abt giving gate in computer science? I am strongly giving it a thought as i have heard abt people from mech, chemical going for cse mtech at iitb, iitk etc..not all IITs accept people from other branches..like iisc, iitkgp only allow people from circuit branches...but the main issue is that comp sc would require thorough preparation and i dont know the employment prospects after that. So gate 2019 is out of question for me. My branch has almost nil prospects at mtech level.
Now appearing from maths subject sounds like a good choice. But have you thought about future prospects? What are the opportunities after msc in mathematics from IITs? I guess research/higher studies is the only option in this case.

state psc better if u have given 3-4 years to upsc why going to research field. its too tough and u constatly have to study study and no other option. No company recruits MTech not even from IISC forget iit. U can only become teacher after MTech and phd hardly any scope from india but yes from abroad i think scope is great

yup you are right, after mtech in india, job market is non-existent. But for computer science graduates, the scene is quite different. I think CSE is the only branch at mtech level which can get us decent to excellent opportunities in the job market. rest all branches are kind of useless for the present employment scenario.
regarding state pcs, the process is way too slow with no guarantee. you might spend 2-3 yrs for 1 pcs examination and might miss the final list. i mean one cant put all his eggs in state pcs basket.
  • @Ajaatshatru what did you finally decide? even i am thinking of filling the form now, but i am not sure abt the discipline.

the thing bothering me about that is after mtech, we might b left with only 1 one choice i.e. enrolling again for phd. thats why i was looking for gate in computer science discipline. atleast it will put us in right track & make us market ready for an increasingly digitalised world & next-gen Internet of things. lots of opportunities might crop up in that field.
