I am pasting below the opinion of Rank-21 of 2011 batch. Found this on orkut, it is without any punctuations (mostly) and is written in one big, as the moderators here say, "monolithic paragraph". I have just added spaces to make it more readable.
------------------------------------------------------------------ very important for filling mains forum hi everybody, i got 531 rank in cse 2009 and then 21 in cse 2011. for two years due to wrong service selection i suffered a lot. when u r in government you come to know a lot of things about services other than ias,ips,ifs.so here is what i think
1. accounting services civil accounts- good exposure to central mini, always stay in delhi,defence accounts- good infrastructure, good long term deputation opportunities, railway account-good infra,will become drm as in irts. postal and telecom accounts- must be one of last in whole list(i got this in 2009)
2. audit and account- good service, no interference, classy life,but lacks administarative powers
3. irts- very good, ias of railways, after irs please put it.
4. indian defence estate service- powers earlier than ias, big house, red light from beginning. very very good. stagnation in long term
5. icls- new service, but good exposure, always in metros, currently headed by promotee level officers, morale of probationers low. but according to me future very good
6.danips>danics>pondicherry police>pondi civil. though group b but better than accounting services. lot of administrative powers. danip is really good. i met additional comm of delhi a danip atleast 10 ips working under him. good life
7.armed forces headquartes- pathetic must be last8. railway personal- so soso final order must beias>ifs>ips>irs customs>irs it>iaa or irts>ides>danip>icls>civil accountc>defence accounts>state services if no group b issue>railway personal>postal and telecom accountsdon't take it lightly as life becomes hell due to a wrong selection. morale becomes low specially when no attempts left
@soap_bend From what I have gathered, both the services are equally good. But customs involves more challenging assignments with postings at ports, SEZ's etc. IT,though being influential, is more desk-oriented.
But, the number of deputations in Enforcement Directorate and Financial Action Task Force etc. are more from the IT branch.
At the end of it all,it solely becomes a personal choice which service to fill first!

I have one more query though. IRS customs before IRS IT?
What your take on that? I thought it was the other way round.
But, the number of deputations in Enforcement Directorate and Financial Action Task Force etc. are more from the IT branch.
