Do make old ncert by bipan chandra your primary source for studies. You may additionally refer to India's struggle for independence and india since Ind by the same author.

No pls don't read it at the initial phase. The info is clumsy and not weaved in a manner for the brain to catch it. Instead read Bipan chnadra's History of modern india (NCERT books) & then if possible read "From plassey to partition", then better read " A NEW LOOK AT MODERN INDIAN HISTORY" by Grover & Grover. A good read of the last book will do wonders to you. India' struggle for independence is a collection & compilation of many essays & articles written by Bipan chnadra & his students for many research & project work. The Flow will not be great as it was edited fom various sources. Better Grover & Grover will give a good flow of thoughts and hence can help you grasp it a a lot better as it was written a a textbook intended for students. Better make use of it. Thanks..
