5000 people with science optional... out of 14959 candidates? Highly improbable. Agree with everything else you say. One cannot predict anything with UPSC, keep preparing. But ofcourse everyone likes to predict/estimate or guess the unknown, else we wouldn't have such a large betting industry. As they say... Dil behlane k liye ghalib ye khayal accha hai.
bhai @rookie I have studies for 8 years in RSS school. I have never ever seen them to be against Muslim or any other community. So saying that saffron organization against muslim is wrong. But still I believe there is a wrong perception about Tippu that he was a hardcore muslim. I am a great admirer of Tippu As far as naming Bangalore airport is concerned I consider it as political gimmick by central government..
Bro when I was in school I did not know the full form of BJP or RSS and didn't even have any idea regarding what they do and their core ideologies. Rss never gives public speeches or shows it is openly hostile to other communities but deep down we all know what it is.. You can be forgiven by anyone for not 'seeing' your school being anti Muslim while u were in school..
Your views are very much in line. RSS is looked upon in south in a very different way compared to north - pretty much explains the bjp vote base in south. In fact, history (not bookish but the one passed from one generation to the next) has a role to play in this. How would south - and understandably so - relate to aurangzeb's butchering of kashmiri pandits and sikhs in the north.
As someone said earlier, it would be wrong to see history through values of secularism and nationalism. Having Hindu God images on coins makes tipu neither secular nor nationalistic (he didn't fight for india as many here would like to think). Britishers and Marathas were equally loathed and for the same reason in dandkaranya / telangana areas during their freedom movement but are seen differently in independent india.
Depending upon the vacancies UPSC calls around 12 to 13 times candidates for Mains and around 3 times for interviews. As per this 14959/12 ~= 1247 , 14959 /13 ~= 1150. This way candidates to be called for interview would be around 1247*3 = 3741 (at max.)

But in our schools tipu was portrayed as a hero who valiantly fought the British Oh yes, Tipu fought valiantly against the British not once, not twice but four times. Lot of historical records to support this.
We need to study History as hard facts and need not mould/twist or give it a color(Saffron/green) convenient to our ideology. Indeed shivaji was a great maratha warrior but he did plunderings outside Maratha. Famous "Chauth" system was his brainwork. These days some people are hell bent to color history. Namo Namo

Well for me it appears at the outset that his rule is one of a chequered one. Why not present the dark side too? Without taking anything away from the merits of Tipu's rule, I think it'd be objective to present facts as they are. It's up to the students to interpret his legacy.
our country's so called "intelligentsia" is so deeply infested with communists that most rational and knowledgeable people like gurcharan das have to soften stand due to such allegations over being saffronist/ communal. if you ever visit indonesia, thailand, vietnam, etc. you will observe how they still respect their pre-medieval era culture and history unlike india where we chosen to forget it and only glorify medieval kings.
criticizing shivaji, calling rajputs/other rulers infighting fools, calling ancient customs draconian, abusing manu will earn you a title of progressive while being proud of your history and not the conquerors, you would be aligned with rss.
sadly, this phenomenon is going to be strengthened over time as most (not all) sensible/intelligent/rational people go for corporate and technical jobs while most (not all) gullible/less intelligent people join academia in india, hence our writers, teachers, historians, sociologists, anthropologists are all perennial losers who hate successful people and call them capitalists, baniya mentality, right wingers, sanghis, and what not.
