  • Let optionals remain but age limit of 32 years should be reduced except for rural candidates.
Yes, in the next census, all of India will become rural. Comon man.
  • y is this stupid meaningless thread allowed to being run? some opinionated people are just showing off their debating skills here...every year such rumour mongers become active around this time and affect studies of people...

who is forcing you to come to this thread?? you can contribute to the meaningful threads of the forum.
  • The problem is not the optional subject but the choices given for it.
I graduated in dentistry. This is not an optional subject provided for by UPSC.
I've had to choose English Literature as a result.
Pray explain to me how studying Shakespeare and Wordsworth will help me become a better administrator.

Either offer all disciplines as optional subjects or else remove the optional altogether.

Many AIIMS grads get selected in the first attempt because they've prepared their optional (Med. Sc.) by learning it from the topmost medical college in the country.

As regards to numbers, I'm fairly certain that the number of dentists giving CSE exceeds the number of, say, Pali literature graduates, or sanskrit graduates. Then why are the latter subjects offered as optionals and not dentistry?

Also, wouldn't it be more pertinent to ask more in-depth questions in GS papers and give more marks for in-depth answers? I've heard many toppers tell that if one writes specialist answers in GS papers, they are awarded less marks.
It's as if you are being punished for showing interest in subjects that really matter the most as an administrator.

I hope the Baswan committee recommends radical changes to the syllabus and the process.
U r right... even my grad subject is not in the list... But what can we do... some are born in rich family some in poor... some are born with high bones density some with low... and some are physically challenged...We were born in Optionally challenged family.. We have to make it now somehow...

Secondly, Those in IIT and AIIMS are smarter than rest cause we are not... and that's why they are in IITs and AIIMS... What can we do.. They have brains.. Rest have to make do with the hard work and luck... Success is 90% hard work and 9% intelligence and 1% Luck.

Thirdly, General studies is a general subject... checked by generalist.. One cannot go into specialised knowledge... The syllabus itself says "Aware citizens" and "No specialisation required"... How can a generalist examiner be expected to know specialised knowledge...

Fourthly, there is a publication division which is run by IAS and publishes material like Kurshetra, Yojana and India year book etc... Literature skills can be used there... Also, literature skills help u understand the nitty gritties of the records and correct translation of records which is to given to local people in their local language thus helping in administration.

But I am with you on the optional thing that many graduate courses are not included... I also face similar situation.. but what can we do?? We can buckle up and rise to the challenge... .
  • Specialised knowledge in GS can also be countered on ground that in administration, administrators will have to deal with layman politicians and people who dont even have good education. How can one expect to drop big theories to these laymen people and expect them to understand. We have to make them understand in simple lucid language which is what is required in GS papers.

GS papers help examiners evaluate the aspirants ability to put forth complex ideas into simple words which common people can understand. If you really have good indepth knowledge, simplify them and put it in a way that a common man can understand. Thats all.

these coaching institutes have thrived because of the never ending changes introduced by the UPSC itself for last 4-5 years. csat, removal of csat, 4 gs papers, world history, ethics etc etc. This has increased uncertainity and the coaching institutes have made loads of money because of this. Once this sylllabus and pattern issue is settled, the coaching business will come down. though it will not be eliminated altogether as i have mentioned in my previous post. removal of optionals will help in reducing the coaching effect because people will not worry about arre yaar ORN mein log pata nhn kya kya pad rahe hain. majority of sane people will agree on this.
    What is ORN??

Pls explain whats ORN if your above statement is not true. It would be great help. Thanks
