even after writing quality answers i got mere 160 last time....what upsc wants in this paper.....do anybody knows what was the highest and avg marks in geo last year
I have a few qns on Geo, been asked in my mock last week. Are my reasons right.
1. Reasons for Bimodal rainfall in Africa
The summer solistices cut the weather patterns in Africa. The passage of the sun over the equator twice in a year creates 2 hot wet seasons separated by a long dry season in between leading to bimodal precipitation.
2. Africa has mirror image w.r.t climates
Africa is cut and divided right through the middle by equator and similarly by the tropics. This creates mirror image of bands of similar conditions w.r.t atmospheric winds, temperature and rainfall patterns. This leads to creation of similar biomes which are mirror images. Tropic Savannahs, Deserts - Libyan, Sahara & Namib, Kalahari etc.
3. How do ice/glaciers exist on tall mountain peaks near the tropics
The presence of dry cold winds at the top due to less dense air, snow formed and it is accumulated and the gradual accumulation leads to compression and formation of glaciers. Mt. Kenya and Kilimanjaro are examples of such phenomena in the tropics. Himalayan glaciers are example in the sub-tropics.
Q1 I don't think that whole africa has bimodal rainfall,it happens only on eastern part.Have to see it further.
Q2 .The primary cause of this mirror-image, is the seasonal movements of the Subtropical Highs of both hemispheres and the Intertropical Convergence Zones (ITCZ) that separate them. The ITCZ is also called the "climate equator"—it lies near the geographic equator, and divides the global air circulation patterns into two mirror images to the north and south.
3.Question is asking the process of "mountain glacier" formation.See go che long but i ccpying from wikipedia.See all types of glaciers and how they are formed and use it according to demand.
Mountain Glacier: "Glaciers form where the accumulation of snow and ice exceeds ablation . The area in which a glacier forms is called a cirque (corrie or cwm) - a typically armchair-shaped geological feature (such as a depression between mountains enclosed by arêtes) - which collects and compresses through gravity the snow which falls into it. This snow collects and is compacted by the weight of the snow falling above it forming névé. Further crushing of the individual snowflakes and squeezing the air from the snow turns it into extremely dense 'glacial ice'. This glacial ice will fill the cirque until it 'overflows' through a geological weakness or vacancy, such as the gap between two mountains. When the mass of snow and ice is sufficiently thick, it begins to move due to a combination of surface slope, gravity and pressure. On steeper slopes, this can occur with as little as 15 m (50 ft) of snow-ice."

Also got 155 last year,but only 60 in p1.Last year i prepared the long answers type question,but left the small topics like base level.This year hoping to get around 110 in both paper.Let's see.

See last year gs1,temp inversion,diff bw east and west rivers,plate tectonics,textile industry location and many more were from optional questions.
Mirror image, bi-modal rainfall aren't these questions too tough for GS? :-O

They are tough even for optional. :P
