    Tomorrow's discussion topics -
    Mass sterilisation deaths
    Child Marriage burden

There is not specific timing for discussion as we have our own respective tym tables. So put ur ideas here whenever u find yourself comfortable. It can be midnight too :-P
If there are any counter questions or clarifications needed on our ideas then we can answer subsequently. Gud luck.
  • India’s population growth stands at 1.6% a year, down from a high of about 2.3% in the 1970s.
India is currently forecast to become the world’s most populous nation in 2030, with numbers approaching 1.5 billion.

    Shortcomings of mass sterilizations:

Targets to doctors along with incentives.
Women are prohibited to have a choice over the contraceptive measures.
No quality checking or inspection by an external expert committe during the procedure and on the quality of medicines and antiseptics used.
Provision of incentives to women indirectly allows them to be treated like a business commodity on the table rather than as a patient who has volunteered by the local health workers. The condition is worser if the women are from underprivileged sections, who are actually the majority in such scenarios.

why does it not target men with same intensity as women?

When a women dies due to sterilization procedure, is just her death that is a concern? What is the society's answer for the motherless children? What about their childhood and wholesome development? Is this issue being dealt with the needed seriousness by our governments? Does this reflect a lacunae in our health system and infrastructure alone?

Please give me some light on skewed sex ratios in certain parts of the country.
  • Child Marriage Burden:

Most common in Bihar, Odisha, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. In other states certain communities are routine defaulters.

    Loss of childhood.
Unprepared to bear either the burden of marital responsibility or childbearing.
Complications during pregnancy and child birth. Increased MMR & IMR.
    Underweight babies. Malnourished mother.
Stunted growth in the next generation.
Couples not being mature enough to take decisions in their family. No peaceful life.
Many a times leads to drop outs from schools.
If both are under aged, mostly spend the rest of their life as labourers. Low productivity and economic growth impaired on large scale.
  • There are various type of social issues related with womens -other than traditional and legacial problems other issues has also evolved in this dynamic worlds changing society and lifestyle ...

    * motherhood cohercion - related to domestic violence.

    * maritial rape - was in news few days back for a legislation related to it , i sense this is a potential topic for interview as the govt... has denied such laws on the basis that our society , values , culture are different from those of western , ..... its advantage and drawbacks as people say it will become perfect heir of throne left after most misused law - dowry prohibition act..

    * parenting or child rearing issue - is there any fault in the traditional way of parenthood of childs , this has been a much debated major social  issue after nirbhaya case .

  • The current medical procedure for women sterilisation is tubectomy which require quarantine beds or rooms, post operative care, medication etc. However due to constraints of our public health system all these are not available. Due to jugaad type of adjustment in operations we face problem of deaths during sterilisation operations.
Why women are forced to undergo sterilisation wheras men sterilisation is much easier and safe? There are misconcept about men sterilisation, mostly related to male virility post operation, weakness, less stamina for physical work etc. There is need to educate people about the male sterilisation.
The need for sterilisation is basically due to ignorance about sex health and related issues. Underprivileged sections of society lack acess to other mthds of sterilisation or can not use them properly. The problem is not faced by new educated generations who know techniques of spacing in child bearing.
  • *underprivileged sections of society lack access to other methods of contraception
  • Despite having legal provisions in place and number of programmes by state govts, still childhood mariages are prevalent? The legal provisions are rarely used as people hesitate to register complaints and tp avoid social boycott or bitter relations with the concerned family. Many child marriages are ignored as the parents are poor and social activists do not want to create further financial problems for these families by 11th hour intervention in marriage.
Apart from child marriages in some tribal areas in recent time the problem of unmarried under 18 mothets has come to the fore. Many time such incidents are settled without any complaint.
I tjink there is need to identiify the vulnerable sections and create strong incentives for these families for not marrying off their daughtets at early age.
  • There are three aects to fighting child marriage.
First is to create awareness about heath complications for women and her child if married at early age.
Second is creating social pressure through informal groups like political parties, social groups relatec to castes etc
And on the legal front the marriage registration and allied benegits should be increased. Instead of filing case against father of girl, the case should be registered against boy and his father.

    SKEWED SEX RATIOS IN INDIA

Lemme begin with a case study.
You can use some facts in your answers.

-Punjab has been notorious of its adverse SEX ratio down the ages
Ever since the first census of 1881 it has been the state with one of the most negative SEX ratio.

-In 1901 the SEX ratio in Punjab was 832 while the national average was 972.According to Census 2001 "every fifth female in Punjab is missing or has not survived bcz of her gender.

-According to a study conducted by punjab Govt, in 2006 every 7th household in Punjab revealed that it has practiced female foeticide.

-As many as 48 percent of the females in Punjab think that there is no harm in SEX selective abortions.
  • Reasons behind skewed SEX ratio

Girl child seen as a liability.

She will get married and leave the house so cannot be counted for support in old age.

    Huge dowry demands.

    Need to be protected more.

Much likely to bring disgrace to the family if something goes wrong.

P.s The underlying factor behind all the reasons mentioned above is PATRIARCHAL MINDSET OF INDIAN SOCIETY.

I came across an article in The Hindu an year back and still remember word to word what Professor Rachna Kapur said,
" as more and more females are entering the bastions of power, the traditional Indian male is reacting with violence"
