  • Political representation of women in India is somewhere around 11% in the Parliament. This is one reason why women centric policies and schemes are not getting the needed attention. The bill seeking reservation is laying idle for 18 years with a mild activity in 2010.

Passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill – which proposes to reserve a third of the seats in the Lok Sabha (lower house) and in all legislative assemblies for women – could be instrumental in sending out a powerful message of women’s empowerment, say experts .

But are we ready to avail the reservation if given especially in politics? Will our social fabric allow women to function independently without affecting their individuality?

This time we have 7 minsiters and 6 are in cabinet.
  • in india the whole foundation for marriage is based on four values dharma, artha ,kama, moksha.
in nutshell, the key reason for marriage is to provide for progeny who will fulfill the task of absolving the pitririn and provide to continue the bloodline of hos family.

the issue of marital rape is a complex one.
on one hand even courts have stated that deliberate act of not having physical relations in course of marriage amounts to cruelty and is a valid ground for divorce.
on the other hand, the issue of women's free will and the absolute right over their bodies is also accepted.
personally,i think criminalizing marital rape will blow out the system .

imagine someone having a grudge against husband/his family, all you need to do is make love to him and the very next moment file a complaint against him.the intimate act of private domain will be out in full public with disastrous effects.
it brings more issues into the picture.who decides the right to have a child-husband or wife?
what constitutes free will of each partner?will it force men to have the need for professional sex workers?

the law in our nation is not gender neutral.it is highly skewed towards females in some cases and rest towards males in others.

take sec.498,scores of false complaints have been filed against husband/his family just to take revenge.
a majority of such cases are later on dissolved by courts.

on the other hand, there is no law to filter out pornographic access to teenagers, no blanket ban on sale of acids,no guidelines for afspa atrocities on women.

the only people who benefit form such laws are the lawyers who make a fool out of the people, who are unable to decipher the complex laws, and fill their pockets.
  • Technological initiatives are welcome step for the section who can afford and use them. This definitely is a progress, but it is not ''the solution''. In this also Nibheek is just nominal, it is neither practical nor logical nor feasible.

  • we can also add the recent Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme.
India also attended the ICPD Cairo Convention for reproductive rights to women, 1995.
  • edited May 2015
India has adopted a democratic system based on equal participation to all irrespective of anything. However the political culture that we have created around or have inherited has pre-modern time traces. The politics of today has created strong entry barriers for new entrants like educated, social activist or women. The entry barriers inthe form of money, muscle power render entry of these sections including women in politics difficult.
The prerequisite of career in politics is strong connect and interaction with people. Women due to domestic engangement and social constraint on her interaction with people outside family/relation etc creates another barrier.
Though politics of nepotism and family domination is not very good idea, even there male child of politician inherit the political legacy and not women.
The political parties are considering winnability as the only criteria in selecting candidate for elections. The winnability again due to political culture means money and muscle power.
Rise of independent (no political background) women in politics is recent phenomenon mainly post electoral reforms. Further electoral reforms like restriction on people with criminal charges etc will facilitate entry of women in politics.
Entry of "good" people in politics is restrained by this culture of winnability in politics, the answer lies in electoral reforms and implementation by election commission. The legal provision regarding women reservation will create the trend of dummy candidature to women. The culture of sarpanch husband is result of this legal proviaion at panchayat level.
Act for representation in politics will not change the situation much, as these women representative will be from same political culture where they have to make many compromises in order to maintain their winnability.
Reforms in electoral politics will bring changes little slow but they will more beneficial than the numbers that the act will provide.
  • Is there a need for law against marital rape? If a law is enacted what would be the challenges in implementation of such law?
  • As a DM what will you do women empowerment? All these days there are various schemes focussed towards women empowerement but still we are lagging behind, why is it so?

    Pls answer
  • @All While we will be discussing technology - I was counter questioned on the emphasis on installing CCTV camera's has been a craze. I wish to know the general opinion w.r.t protectionist approach in general and CCTV surveillance. What steps may be taken to assist such technological interventions and over time make it effective.
