In closed society due to absence of mobility, people invariably chose their own membership group as the reference group... For instance, in caste based society, people will compare themselves with members of their own castes... one exception to this is sanskritisation.
But in open society, people can chose non membership group as a reference group... for instance, field soldiers choose soldiers posted at headquarters as reference group.... Many a times this leads to relative deprivation... as a results some individuals go for anticipatory socialisation which leads to social mobility....

@nehaaa basic theoretical explanation is the same. like thinkers are the same. not much difference. but there may be some changes depending on the teacher. so just make sure that you ask them about the year also. 2013 notes or the ones after that should be fine. flavido etc i think hv 2013-14 ones. but they charge a lot. better ask the local shopkeepers in rajendra nagar or mukh. nagar directly on phone. rest other experienced people like @GreyMatterRules can tell you better.
Which is the best Test Series for Sociology Mains? This Year, I m not able to qualify Mains with Socio optional. Thinking of shifting to Delhi and joining any good test series.

I want to form a group of ppl,those prep in delhi..max 2-3 and hv written mains earlier..with modest score..to discuss past year questions of Socio..esp paper 2..and then paper1 becoz paper 2 is dynamic..more analysis of contemp than reading books..discussion would widen thought process

@techack See, what's my take on this: This view is mid-way between Durkheim's view and Phenomenologist's and Psychologist's view. Durkheim's view is society put constraints on individuals to such an extent that individual is nothing but a society's manifestation. On the other hand, psychologists believe that individual is free of society to large extent. Mead believes that both society and self (individuals) influence and condition each other. Self internalizes society through the process of socialisation. Individuals use the symbols of society to communicate with each other through the process of role taking. Thus, society helps in the birth and formation of self. But at the same time, self influences society. Every self has a 'I' component which is not bound by the norms of society. It is creative and innovative and hence largely functions independent of social constraints. This 'I' introduces new norms in society and hence changes it. Further, you can also include here, the use of symbols which are invented by self and are basic to social formation.
I dont know if this is complete answer. May be more points can be added.
