  • Thanks a lot @INSAS !

Is Sanskritization always a deliberate process or could there by an unintended Sanskritization where a caste, without any intentions, starts following rituals of reference group due to its exposures to those rites ?

@upsc_cracker deliberate.. Generally such changes are followed by a claim to a higher position in the caste hierarchy than that traditionally conceded to the claimant class by the local community.

'According to M.N. Srinivas, Sanskritisation is not just the adoption of new customs and habits, but also includes exposure to new ideas and values appearing in Sanskrit literature. He says the words Karma, dharma, paap, maya, samsara and moksha are the most common Sanskritic theological ideas which become common in the talk of people who are sanskritised'. (wiki)

simply imitating rituals would not count as sanskritization.. sanskritization includes a series of steps.. imitation is the first one..
  • I am preparing without classes. Also, being an engineer and MBA, I have no background on sociology.
For paper 2- which books should I read?

Any and all guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot n advance.
Paper 2 is tricky one. Should be covered from diverse sources. Vision IAS has given references in their Test series schedule. You can refer to it.
    Thanks!!
  • For socio paper 2- how useful is Ram Ahuja's "Society in India" and "Social problems in India". i have the 2010 editions. Is that too old? Also, which other book is a MUST READ for paper 2? How important is Yogendra Singh's book?
yogendra singh is far more important than ram ahuja books.... ram ahuja books are pathetic .. huge mistake i committed by purchasing them
    Thanks!!
  • i have both of them.. ram ahuja bought recently(social problems in india)... yogender singh deals with social changes beaitifully but it needs to be complemented with other topics like youth unrest..voilence on women etc which is covered with cursory examples..

and i agree totally depending on ram ahuja for the topics he discussed will be a disaster... but it has got its importance... buy its latest edition 2014..
    Thanks!!
