Geography Optional for Mains 2013

  • I think this is the most stone cold optional on the whole forumias site despite most people taking this optional.

    None of the thread for this optional is more than 25 comments ... and average is 5-7.... I think either no one is serious for this optional or the optional has got a threat from UPSC after last yr bad mains results.
  • @xxbee I'm sure that everyone will be serious about their optional. Not many active forumias users has Geography optional. BTW geography produced good results last year (Though paper1 was scary).

    @all Let us start with the chapters . Give prep time of 2-3 days . 1-2 days for discussing questions ,answer writing and comments. Seniors , select the first chapter (and the rest when and if we complete the first one).

    1. Seismic waves, the only authentic source in detecting earth's interior. Discuss.

  • I think doing geography is no small feat guys ... we have to take it seriously .. in my view we should try for all papers equally. Also doing answer writing is no easy thing as writing answer in limited time is not easy. Also only writing answer will not be a wholesome process to cover the syllabus.

    We have to design a long term plan with atleast a week for one chapter to discuss all possible questions related to that chapter of the syllabus. [like almost every chapter is a book in itself so better prepare it thoroughly]. Also we can decide on small chapters for 2-3 days.

    Also if 20 chapters will take at least 12 weeks then it also it is not impossible as it counts only 3 months. Later we will revise.

    yeah what u said is correct. this is not pub ad or socio where we have to practice answers to get good marks. here we have to know the content. otherwise we're all fkd! someone asked the qn...system approach in landform analysis. i bet very few can answer such qns (i think that came in compulsory section!). so it better to take a chapter and discuss possible qns and format of the answers. thats is more than enough! Guys how to deal with this combined qn answer booklet??!!!
  • ^I think post- IFoS exam we'll get a better idea abt the combined answer booklet thing- ruled/plain, space given per Q etc..
  • This combined booklet is actually a challenge ... now no one knows how much space we will get and how much diagrams can be made

    I've struggled to link systems approach with landform analysis but penned down whatever I thought could be related. I could be completely wrong but it was worth a try to prepare for such uncertain questions. Here what I wrote :-

    A System refers to a unit or a completed whole consisting of interrelated and interlinked parts separated from an environment by a boundary. It is, thus, a coherent including elements and the links between them. Landform development could be a result of sudden process within a matter of seconds such as magma outflow from a volcano or gradual process such as Weathering, Gradation or Diastrophism. Either process involves various systems like Fluvial Cycle, Glacial Cycle etc and each of these systems have further sub-systems or units that constantly interact with each other (wind, water, snow). Considering the systems approach classification, these systems can thus be termed as open as well as morphological since they interact and occupy well demarcated space & dimensions.

    It is also important to note that the "Principle of Equilibrium" in systems approach is very much applicable to landform development. The components of a system are not only inter-dependent but also in a state of equilibrium within and with the outside environment. Any change or disturbance in the outside environment causes in-equilibrium within, so it is the natural tendency of a system to move away form the state of imbalance towards equilibrium to avoid entropy. This principle has been very well validated by the recent flooding of Uttarakhand where the changes in outside environment caused the system to introduce changes within.
