i m in too...yar i m a newcomer and just started with western philosophy....i have read plato from palmer and tried to write a answer ...this may be the easiest of question but just want to see whether my approach is right or not..i m posting my answer...please give feedback about my approach

Q Explain Platos ontological theory of forms.Is knowledge one of the forms? Give reason. (12.5 marks)

A Plato in his simile of line has demonstrated the hierarchical nature of state of being with the corresponding level of awareness in the following manner
pure reasoning - the forms
understanding -scientific concepts
belief - particular object
conjecture -images

epistemology ontology

Plato divided the line into two level
1 Opinion (lower level)
2 Knowledge (higher level)
The lowest level of awareness is at conjecture level with image as its objectwhere the person mistakes images for reallity. Then belief at second level with particular object like a particular truth as its object.

For transition of opinion to knowledge, the particular object needs to be raised to the level of theory which itself is the image of something higher which plato calls as forms.These forms are eternal truth and source of all reality.The form and its knowledge is sustained by the 'Good' which is the superform on which whole of reality is founded.
All the knowledge is ultimately the knowledge of good and therefore this knowledge is one of the forms which is dependent on the superform.



Guys this is what i have written with my little knowledge please give critical feedback so that i can correct me at the start itself..I have no guidance except this forum..

Good start bro . Actually we just started the thread and still haven't decided which portion to start from..so i think , critical feedback to u'r question may take some time .
My observation /comments :

1. Good intro is missing . - well we all need to work on it as good intro and good conclusion are very important in philosophy .
i.e Plato's metaphysics revolves around his "theory of being" or ontological theory of forms. Plato gave a technical application to his myth of cave theory which is known as "simile of line" ...........

2. While explaining simile of line, u could use Good-Sun analogy .
3. 2nd part of the question could be answered by using some examples : like knowledge of the truth, justice and knowledge is recollection . as explained in the book .

P.S- bro i know commenting is very easy than writing an answer but to serve the purpose of the thread i must do the job.

thanks for ur feedback bro.. yes i think intro i was lacking something but didnt know how to start it...u have given the intro which will definitely help...about good sun analogy i was thinking but thought that it might make answer more lengthy..

and yes..yar actually i was about to start a thread for feedback when i saw this thread and i posted answer directly without reading the previous pages...so didnt know that modalities are still being carried out...

i completed my b.tech with computer science in 2014.now I'm preparing for cse (Philosophy as a optional),so guys can u help or guide me.I'm planning to join a coaching in delhi so guys can u tell me that which coaching is best for hindi medium student ??

@shiva2015iasaspirant - I m not a Hindi medium student..but Patanjali is a good institution for दर्शनशास्त्र..as mitra teaches in English only ( as per my knowledge ),thus leaving Patanjali nly..ha u can also contact Ambuj shrivastava..he too is considered as 1 f good teacher of philosophy..bt I ll give more weightage to Patanjali..so choose it wisely..n all d best for ur attempt

@Aakash90987 welcome buddy . that's not a problem ..u can contribute as much as possible , without any compulsion and yes ..we will make it a sustainable thread. As we begin things with so much zeal but becomes lethargic later (as said by one of the member .) ..so we will set small target but will try to accomplish them on time.
